Govalle is an East Austin neighborhood about 3 miles from downtown, known for its mix of longtime residents, artists, and the breweries and galleries that have moved into what used to be industrial space along its southern edge. It borders Oak Springs Road to the north, Airport Boulevard to the east, the Colorado River to the south, and Pleasant Valley Road to the west. Living in Govalle
Govalle Neighborhood Park has a playground, basketball court, and outdoor pool, and the Boggy Creek Greenbelt connects to Parque Zaragoza, a longtime cultural gathering space for Austin’s Mexican American community established in 1931. Kids here attend Govalle Elementary, which has served East Austin since 1931, then feed into Martin Middle School and Eastside Early College High School in Austin ISD. The neighborhood has also become a hub for East Austin’s creative scene — Springdale General, a 165,000-square-foot creative office and studio campus on Springdale Road, opened in 2017 with maker studios, galleries, and workspaces, and in 2025 the City Council established the Govalle Cultural District along that same stretch. The neighborhood’s name comes from “GaValla,” coined by a Swedish immigrant rancher in the 1850s to mean good grazing land — a nod to its farming history before it became part of the city.
Housing options in Govalle
Govalle’s housing stock is a mix of older single-family homes from the neighborhood’s original build-out and newer infill construction, so you’ll see everything from smaller original houses to larger new builds on the same streets. Prices and lot sizes vary block to block, which is typical for a neighborhood that’s still filling in with new construction. If you’re comparing it against other East Austin neighborhoods or want to see everything currently listed in the 78702 zip code, I can help you sort through those options too.
