People use “real estate agent” and “REALTOR” like they mean the same thing, and in casual conversation they mostly do. But if you’re planning to sell your Highland Haven house with a REALTOR specifically, it’s worth knowing what that word actually guarantees, because it’s more than a nicer job title.
I’m Robbie English, REALTOR and Broker at Uncommon Highland Lakes Realty, and both halves of that title matter for what I can do for you here in Highland Haven.
REALTOR is a trademarked term, not a job description
Anyone with a real estate license can call themselves an agent. Only a member of the National Association of REALTORS can use the term REALTOR, and membership comes with a Code of Ethics that goes beyond what state licensing law requires. It covers how I represent your interests, how I disclose information, how I handle offers, and how I deal with other agents on your behalf.
That code isn’t decorative. There’s an actual enforcement process behind it, with real consequences for violations. When you work with a REALTOR, you have recourse that doesn’t exist with someone who’s simply licensed.
What the Broker part adds
Broker is a separate, higher tier of license in Texas, requiring more experience and additional education beyond a standard salesperson license. As a Broker, I carry direct legal responsibility for the transactions I handle, including my own. There’s no supervising broker above me signing off on what I do. That accountability sits with me directly, and it shapes how carefully I handle your contract, your disclosures, and your closing paperwork.
What this looks like in a real Highland Haven transaction
In practice, it means I disclose material facts about a property honestly, even the ones that make a sale harder. It means I don’t misrepresent an offer to pressure you into a decision. It means when I’m negotiating with a buyer’s agent, both of us are operating under the same ethical standard, which tends to make the whole process less adversarial than people expect.
Thinking About Selling?
Why this matters more, not less, in a small market
Highland Haven is small enough that word travels. Agents who work this stretch of Lake LBJ regularly know each other, and a reputation for straight dealing or for cutting corners follows you here more than it would in a bigger market. I’ve built my practice on the first kind of reputation, and the REALTOR Code of Ethics is the baseline that keeps me there, not the ceiling.
If you want to sell your Highland Haven house with a REALTOR who takes that distinction seriously, let’s talk about your property and what representation actually looks like from the first conversation through closing.
