Tarrytown is one of my favorite neighborhoods to work in west of downtown Austin — it’s the kind of place where you can walk to Lake Austin, sit under a hundred-year-old oak tree, and still be at the office in ten minutes. Homes here range from original 1930s-era cottages to newer estates, and the neighborhood has held its character even as the rest of Austin has changed around it. Living in Tarrytown
Tarrytown is bordered by Lake Austin Boulevard to the south, Lake Austin itself to the west, West 35th Street to the north, and Mopac to the east, which puts nearly every street within a few minutes of downtown. Some development in the area dates back to the mid-1800s, but Tarrytown was formally platted as a subdivision in 1915 and named after Tarrytown, New York, by its founders in the 1930s. Kids in the neighborhood attend Casis Elementary, which has operated as a joint Austin ISD and University of Texas school since 1951, and some homes along the lake have direct water access for boating and kayaking.

Because the neighborhood was built out over more than a century, you’ll see everything from original mid-century cottages to newer custom builds on the same street, often with mature oak canopies regardless of the home’s age. Prices and lot sizes vary a lot depending on proximity to the lake versus the eastern edge near Mopac, so it’s worth walking a few different pockets before deciding where to focus. Tarrytown borders neighborhoods with a similar tree-lined, established feel, like Old Enfield and Pemberton Heights, so it’s worth looking at those too if you don’t find the right fit here.
