I work two real estate markets that run on two very different event calendars — the fast-growing Austin metro through Uncommon Realty, and the small lake towns of the Highland Lakes out past Lake Travis through Uncommon Highland Lakes Realty. This page collects every event guide I write for both regions. The point isn’t just to help you plan around a festival weekend — it’s to make it easier to actually get involved in your community once you’re here. Knowing what’s worth showing up for, and when, is a real part of putting down roots somewhere, whether that’s a new neighborhood in Austin or a lake town you’re just getting to know. It’s also useful to see what a season actually looks like before you commit to a neighborhood, a lake town, or a closing date scheduled around one of these weekends.
Two Regions, Two Different Calendars
Austin’s calendar runs on national-scale events that shut down streets and fill every short-term rental for miles around a single weekend: SXSW takes over downtown every March, the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix brings the world to Circuit of the Americas every October, and the Austin City Limits Music Festival spreads across two weekends in Zilker Park each fall. The Highland Lakes run on a smaller, water-driven calendar instead. Kingsland’s AquaBoom over the Fourth of July and Marble Falls’ Walkway of Lights each December are genuine regional draws, but they’re built around a chain of lakes and a handful of small towns, not a metro of two million people.
Getting Involved in Your Community
Moving somewhere new — or realizing you’ve lived in a place for years without ever going to what makes it feel like a community — is exactly why I put these guides together. Showing up to a rodeo that’s run since 1938, a small-town bluebonnet festival, or a lake town’s Fourth of July tradition is how you actually meet neighbors and start to feel like you belong, not just own property here. That’s the real theory behind this page: know what’s happening and when, so getting involved is a choice you can actually make instead of something you find out about after the fact.
Why the Event Calendar Also Matters If You’re Buying, Selling, or Renting
This isn’t a things-to-do list for its own sake. If you’re touring homes in Central Austin during SXSW or ACL weekend, plan for road closures and parking that turn a normal 20-minute showing loop into something much longer — I build that into the schedule for out-of-town buyers.
