Every spring, thousands of people spread out blankets on the Great Lawn at Zilker Park, unpack kites of every shape and color, and spend the day watching the sky. I’ve lived and worked in Austin long enough to consider the Zilker Kite Festival one of the events that actually feels like it belongs to the city, not something built for tourists. It’s free, it’s outdoors, and it’s been happening in some form since before most of the neighborhoods around it existed.
If you’re new to Austin, planning a visit, or just curious about the festival that shuts down Barton Springs Road once a year, here’s what I know about it, how it fits into the rhythm of the Zilker neighborhood, and what to expect if you go.

A tradition that predates most of Austin’s other festivals
The kite contest that eventually became the ABC Kite Fest started in 1929, organized by the Exchange Club of Austin. It moved to Zilker Park in 1936 and has stayed there ever since, which makes it one of the longest continuously running kite festivals in the country. For comparison, ACL Fest didn’t start until 2002. This event has been part of Austin’s spring calendar for roughly a century.
The Exchange Club’s kite contest and showcase is still the heart of the day. Over the decades the event has grown well beyond the original contest, and in recent years it’s been organized with support from ABC Home and Commercial Services and the nonprofit Friends of the ABC Kite Fest, which is where the current name comes from. The contest itself, though, is unchanged in spirit: anyone can enter, any kind of kite qualifies, and it’s still free to sign up.
What actually happens at the festival
The festival runs on the Great Lawn at Zilker Park, the same open stretch of grass that hosts ACL Fest and plenty of pickup soccer games the rest of the year. A few things make up most of the day:
The kite contest and showcase
This is the original event and still draws the most attention. Kite fliers compete in categories like steadiest kite in the air and highest angle, and it’s open to kids and adults with any style of kite, homemade or store-bought. You don’t need to enter to enjoy watching it. Plenty of people just come to fly their own kites nearby while the judged contest happens.
Kite making and kids activities
There’s usually a section set up for building your own kite on the spot, along with a kids club area that has bounce houses and face painting. A children’s music stage runs through the day too, so it’s not only an event for people who already own a kite. If you show up empty-handed, you can generally still leave with something to fly.
Food and vendors
Food trucks and concession stands line the edges of the lawn, and past years have included local names like Amy’s Ice Creams, JP’s Pancake Company, and Lupe Tortilla. Bring cash or a card, since vendor payment setups vary. There’s also usually a pet-friendly area if you’re bringing a dog along.
When it happens
The festival lands on a Saturday or Sunday sometime between late February and early April, depending on the year and the park’s event calendar. For a long stretch it was held on the first Sunday of March, tied loosely to the season’s first real stretch of good kite-flying wind. In more recent years it’s shifted around a bit, sometimes landing in early April instead. Because the exact date moves from year to year, I’d check the official ABC Kite Fest website for the current date rather than relying on what it was the year before. What stays consistent is the season: it’s always a spring event, and it’s always at Zilker Park.
Getting there and what it does to traffic
This is the part that matters most if you live nearby. On festival day, Barton Springs Road closes between MoPac and Azie Morton Road, along with sections of Stratford Drive, Nature Center Drive, Bee Caves Road, Rollingwood Drive, and all of Lou Neff Road. Closures typically run from early morning to early evening. If you’re driving in from the west side, exiting at Barton Skyway or Rollingwood is not the move that day. Staying on the frontage road from the Loop 360 exit and working into the left lane toward the park tends to work better.
Parking fills up fast in the lots around the park, and the surrounding residential streets enforce no-parking rules that get patrolled closely on event day. CapMetro has offered free bus rides to the festival in past years, and there’s bike parking set up along Barton Springs Road if you’d rather skip the car entirely.
None of this is on the scale of ACL Fest, which shuts down a much bigger footprint for multiple weekends, or Trail of Lights, which brings steady evening traffic through the park for weeks. The kite festival is a single day. But if you live in Zilker, Barton Hills, or one of the neighborhoods that border the park, it’s worth building the day around the closures rather than getting caught off guard by them. Locals who’ve been through a few of these know to just walk or bike over if they’re close enough.
Why this matters if you’re looking at homes near Zilker
Events like this are part of what daily life looks like if you live around the park. A handful of times a year, whether it’s the kite festival, ACL, or the holiday lights, the streets around Zilker get busier and parking gets tighter for a stretch. For some buyers that’s a minor tradeoff for being able to walk to Barton Springs Pool or the Great Lawn any other day of the year. For others it’s worth knowing about before they make an offer.

- Check the official festival site close to the date, since it can shift between late February and early April
- Get to the park early if you want a good spot on the lawn or a closer parking lot
- Bring sunscreen and a blanket, since the lawn has very little shade
- Cash on hand makes the food truck line move faster
- If you live within walking or biking distance, skip the car altogether that day
