Driftwood is an unincorporated community in western Hays County, tucked into the Texas Hill Country about 30 miles southwest of downtown Austin and just a few miles south of Dripping Springs. It’s wine country out here, with boutique vineyards and tasting rooms scattered across the hills, and it’s also home to the Salt Lick BBQ, the outdoor barbecue pit that’s been pulling people out from Austin since 1967. Buyers who come looking at Driftwood TX homes for sale are usually after the same thing: room to spread out, a slower pace, and an easy enough drive back into the city when they need it.
I’m Robbie English, REALTOR and Broker at Uncommon Realty, and I’ve spent decades working Central Texas real estate. Driftwood deals are a little different than what I handle inside Austin proper, with acreage, septic and well systems, and sometimes an ag exemption on the tax bill to sort through, and I like walking buyers through those details before they write an offer, not after.
Life in Driftwood’s wine country
Driftwood sits inside the Texas Hill Country wine region. Fall Creek Vineyards and Driftwood Estate Winery are both nearby, along with a handful of other tasting rooms within a short drive, and weekends out here often mean live music at a vineyard or a stop at Salt Lick BBQ, which still draws a line even on a weekday. It’s the kind of place where people plan their weekend around a winery rather than a shopping trip.
The drive into downtown Austin runs 35 to 45 minutes on Highway 290 or FM 150, longer at rush hour. Dripping Springs, with its grocery stores and closer-in conveniences, is about 10 minutes away. Real distance from the city, but not an inconvenient one, is a lot of what draws buyers out here in the first place.
Acreage and home types in Driftwood
Driftwood is one of the few places within a half hour of Austin where you can still buy real acreage. Many transactions out here run from several acres up to 50 acres or more, and that shapes the housing stock: custom-built homes, ranch-style properties, and increasingly some higher-end new construction as development around the Driftwood Golf and Ranch Club brings golf course lots and vineyard-adjacent homes into the mix. If you want a barn, a horse setup, or just real distance between you and the next house, this is one of the few communities left in Hays County where that’s still realistic.
Why experience matters when you’re choosing an agent
Not every agent brings the same level of preparation to a transaction. Some are part-time. Some are new. A strong personality doesn’t make up for weak negotiation skills in a multiple-offer situation.
I’ve spent decades in this business, as both an agent and a broker — holding leadership roles, mentoring other REALTORS, and speaking on the subject around the country. My team brings that same standard to every client: clear communication and honest coordination from the first showing through closing.
The Uncommon Realty difference
At Uncommon Realty, we’re not chasing volume or marketing buzzwords. Every client gets an actual plan built around their goals, not a generic checklist. When you work with me, you’re working directly with someone who’s spent years refining how this process should be done.
