78640 covers Luling, Texas, a Caldwell County town about 47 miles south of Austin along US-183, just north of I-10. If you’ve spent any time driving through, you already know the two things Luling is known for: watermelons and oil. The town’s water tower is painted to look like a 154-foot-tall watermelon, and residents have painted somewhere around 200 of the pumpjacks scattered around town into everything from football players to a cow jumping over the moon.

What Makes Luling Different
The annual Watermelon Thump has run since 1954 and now draws more than 30,000 people to a town of roughly 5,500 residents every June, seed-spitting contest included. The Luling Oil Museum downtown covers the town’s 1920s oil boom, when the field here made Luling one of the busier oil towns in the state — a lot of those original wells are still pumping today, which is part of why so many of the pumpjacks around town ended up painted rather than replaced.
Housing and Getting Around
Luling straddles Caldwell and Guadalupe counties and is zoned to Luling ISD. Housing ranges from historic homes near downtown to newer construction and acreage properties on the outskirts, and well and septic systems are common outside the city’s core, so I’d get those inspected separately from the general home inspection rather than assume they’re fine. US-183 and I-10 connect Luling to San Marcos, Lockhart, and Seguin, with Austin itself a manageable but real commute at around 47 miles — I always recommend driving that route at the time of day you’d actually use it before deciding it fits your schedule.
Because Luling is a small town, don’t assume every address feeds the same campus — confirm the exact school assignment with Luling ISD directly before you write an offer.
