Tarrytown is one of the neighborhoods I show buyers who want to be close to downtown Austin without giving up big lots and mature trees — it sits just west of downtown along Lake Austin, and it’s one of the city’s older, more established addresses. I’m Robbie English, REALTOR and Broker at Uncommon Realty, and Tarrytown is a neighborhood I work regularly alongside the rest of central Austin.
What makes Tarrytown, Tarrytown
Tarrytown runs roughly from Lake Austin Boulevard on the south up to 35th Street on the north, bounded by Lake Austin to the west and MoPac to the east. Homes here range from 1920s cottages from the neighborhood’s earliest days to newer mansions built on the same tree-lined lots, so you’ll find a real mix of eras on a single block rather than one uniform look. Mayfield Park and Nature Preserve and The Contemporary Austin at Laguna Gloria both sit inside the neighborhood, and Lions Municipal Golf Course — Austin’s public course, open since 1924 — is right on the eastern edge. Muny holds a real piece of civil rights history: in 1950 it quietly became the first desegregated municipal golf course in the former Confederate states, years ahead of Brown v. Board of Education.
Schools and getting around
Tarrytown is zoned to Austin ISD, including Casis Elementary and O. Henry Middle School, both well-regarded campuses. Reed Park and the Tarrytown Shopping Center cover day-to-day needs without leaving the neighborhood, and you’re a short drive from downtown via Enfield Road or MoPac — close enough that a lot of my clients here work downtown and skip the highway commute most other close-in buyers deal with.
