Continuing Education is Just as Important As Current Sales: Why It Matters for Your Real Estate Success

When hiring a real estate agent, many buyers and sellers focus solely on an agent’s past sales and current listings. But there’s something just as critical that often gets overlooked: continuing education.  Continuing education is just as important as current sales when you are looking to hire a real estate agent or broker.  It’s not just a box to check for license renewal. It’s an ongoing investment in knowledge that directly impacts your real estate experience. And not all education is created equal.  I am Robbie English, managing broker for Uncommon Realty and I would love to explain further.

In Texas, real estate agents must complete a set number of continuing education (CE) hours to maintain their licenses. But where they obtain those hours—and the quality of instruction they receive—can make all the difference in their ability to serve you effectively. Let’s talk about why continuing education is just as important as current sales and how it can shape your real estate transaction.

Continuing Education is Just as Important As Current Sales: Why It Matters for Your Real Estate Success

Not All Education is Created Equal

Many real estate agents opt for the easiest and fastest way to complete their CE hours—online courses. While online learning can be convenient, it often lacks depth. Agents who solely rely on self-paced, digital education may miss out on key discussions, insights, and real-world scenarios that happen in a live classroom setting.

Imagine this: You’re facing a complex negotiation with a seller who has multiple offers on the table. You want an agent who has sharpened their negotiation skills in a real-world setting, engaging in discussions with experienced instructors and peers—not just clicking through slides. The difference in experience could mean thousands of dollars in or out of your pocket.

The Value of In-Person, Expert-Led Instruction

One of the biggest advantages of in-person continuing education is exposure to different perspectives. A classroom setting allows real estate agents to:

  • Discuss real-world case studies
  • Hear how other professionals have solved challenges
  • Learn from active industry experts who understand current market conditions
  • Get insights that may not be available in an online course

At TexasRealEstate.Education, for example, instructors are actively practicing in their market areas. This means they bring firsthand experience, up-to-date knowledge, and real-world problem-solving techniques to the classroom. They don’t just teach theories—they share what’s working (and what’s not) in today’s market.

How to Check a Real Estate Agent’s Education History

Here’s something most consumers don’t realize: You can check an agent’s education history in Texas. The Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) provides a public record of an agent’s completed continuing education courses. Before hiring a real estate agent, take a few minutes to look up their education history:

  1. Visit TREC’s website
  2. Search for the agent’s license number
  3. Review the courses they’ve taken and where they’ve taken them

If you see that an agent’s education consists only of basic, online courses, that could be a red flag. It might indicate that they are just meeting minimum requirements rather than actively investing in their expertise. On the other hand, if you find they’ve taken courses from reputable providers like TexasRealEstate.Education, that’s a sign they’re serious about staying sharp and delivering high-quality service.

The Impact on Your Real Estate Transaction

Every real estate transaction is unique, and challenges can arise at any moment. An agent who prioritizes high-quality continuing education will be better equipped to:

  • Navigate complex negotiations
  • Handle legal and contract intricacies with confidence
  • Identify potential pitfalls before they become problems
  • Provide strategic advice based on the latest market trends

When hiring a real estate agent, you want someone who is actively learning, growing, and staying ahead of the curve—not just someone who has met the minimum education requirement to renew their license.

What This Means for You as a Buyer or Seller

If you’re buying or selling a home, your agent’s level of education affects your bottom line. The difference between an agent who passively completes online CE courses and one who actively engages in expert-led education could be the difference between a smooth transaction and a costly mistake.

Next time you’re hiring a real estate agent, ask them about their continuing education. Where do they take their classes? Do they invest in high-quality, interactive learning experiences? Have they studied under instructors who are actively practicing in their market?

Continuing education is just as important as current sales when it comes to selecting the right real estate agent. By doing a little research and choosing an agent who prioritizes high-quality education, you’re setting yourself up for a successful transaction—one where you have an advocate who is knowledgeable, skilled, and truly prepared to guide you through the process.

Take Action: Do Your Homework

Before making your final decision on hiring a real estate agent, take a few minutes to: ✔️ Check their education history at TREC’s website ✔️ Ask where they take their continuing education courses ✔️ Research the education providers they’ve used, such as TexasRealEstate.Education

By taking these simple steps, you can ensure you’re working with an agent who is not just experienced in sales, but also continuously learning and improving to better serve you.

Remember: A well-educated agent is a better advocate. And in real estate, that can make all the difference.
