Austin Home Paint Color Trends: Power of Paint When Selling

A fresh coat of paint is one of the most impactful, most affordable things you can do before selling a home. It covers up wear and tear and gives buyers a clean slate to imagine their own style in. Let’s talk about Austin home paint color trends.

But not all colors perform the same with buyers. According to a study by Zillow, paint color can actually affect both your sale price and how fast your home sells.

Unveiling the Power of Paint When Selling Your Home

Why Paint Color Affects How Buyers See a Home

Picture a home that’s been staged well, with fresh paint throughout. It’s not just about hiding wear — the right color can make a room feel bigger and more open, and make the whole house flow better from room to room.

Austin home paint color trends aren’t just about looks, either — color affects how buyers perceive a space. Light, neutral tones give buyers a blank canvas, making it easier for them to picture their own furniture and style in the home.

What Zillow’s Data Shows

Zillow’s research points to specific colors that actually move the sale price.

A “greige” exterior — a mix of gray and beige — sold for $1,526 more than the same home in white. A front door painted charcoal or black added $6,271 to the sale price.

In the kitchen, tuxedo cabinets (a mix of light and dark tones) added about $1,547 in perceived value. Periwinkle blue bathrooms brought a $2,786 premium.

Bedrooms painted in calming shades of blue sold for $1,856 more. Dining rooms in slate blue added over $1,926. These are worth keeping in mind if you’re deciding on Austin home paint color trends for your own home.

How to Choose Your Colors

The main rule: go with colors that appeal broadly rather than colors you personally love. A bold red kitchen or a bright yellow exterior might be your taste, but Zillow’s data shows red kitchens sold for $2,310 less and yellow exteriors for $3,408 less on average.

Stick with a neutral palette that works for the widest range of buyers. Local trends and your home’s surroundings can help guide your choices.

Beyond Just Color

Paint color is only one piece of getting a home ready to sell. HOA rules and regional preferences matter too, both for how the home looks and what it’s worth. Talking with an experienced agent and looking at local market trends can help you make the right call.

Bottom line — the right paint job can genuinely help your home sell faster and for more. A little planning goes a long way toward making your home stand out.

7 Steps to Get the Most Out of Painting Before You Sell

  1. Evaluate Your Current Colors: Look at your home’s current color scheme honestly and figure out which areas would benefit most from a fresh coat.
  2. Research Local Trends: Look into what colors are working for buyers in your specific market. Ask your agent for input tailored to your area.
  3. Go Neutral: Light, neutral tones give buyers a blank canvas and appeal to the widest range of tastes.
  4. Focus on High-Impact Areas: Prioritize the exterior, kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, and dining room — these have the biggest effect on buyer perception and value.
  5. Pick Colors With Data Behind Them: Based on Zillow’s research, consider “greige” for exteriors, periwinkle blue for bathrooms, and calming blues for bedrooms.
  6. Skip the Personal Favorites: It’s tempting to paint in your own favorite colors, but stick with what appeals broadly. Avoid bold or unusual colors that might turn off buyers.
  7. Talk to the Pros: Get input from me and from painters who understand color choices and what’s working in the local market.

Following these steps can help your home sell faster and for more in today’s market.
