Jonestown sits on the north shore of Lake Travis in Travis County, about 25 miles and roughly 30 minutes northwest of Austin. Known locally as the Gateway to the Hill Country, it’s a small city — around 2,700 residents — and it’s one of the areas I point buyers to when lake access and a slower pace matter more than being close to downtown. Housing ranges from lakefront estates in master-planned communities to more modest homes on wooded lots further from the water. Living in Jonestown
The Hollows on Lake Travis is the best-known community here — a 1,400-acre master-planned development with a private Beach Club, infinity-edge pools, a marina, and roughly 10 miles of trails. Northlake Hills is a gated community on the lake with its own marina, pools, pickleball courts, and a lakeside bar and grill. For public lake access, Jones Brothers Park is a 32-acre park on the Sandy Creek arm of Lake Travis with three boat ramps, sand volleyball and tennis courts, and a trail into the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge. Local dining includes Rolling Thunder Roadhouse, Parrain’s Louisiana Kitchen, and Tugs Boathouse BBQ, with more shopping and restaurants a short drive away in Cedar Park.
School zoning in Jonestown varies by section — part of town falls in Lago Vista ISD — so it’s worth confirming the district for any specific address before you fall in love with a house.
Housing options in Jonestown
Lakefront homes in communities like The Hollows and Northlake Hills run from newer construction to custom estates, with private docks and water views built into the price. Away from the water, you’ll find more traditional single-family homes on larger, wooded lots — a different price point, but still with easy access to the lake and the Hill Country. That range is part of what makes Jonestown work for such a wide mix of buyers.
