North Loop is one of my favorite corners of Central Austin to help buyers explore. It sits about five miles north of downtown, tucked between Koenig Lane and West 51st Street with North Lamar Boulevard on one side and I-35 on the other. The mix of midcentury bungalows, small apartment buildings, and the walkable North Loop Boulevard strip gives the neighborhood a character you won’t find anywhere else in Austin. Living in North Loop
North Loop Boulevard is the heart of the neighborhood, a walkable stretch of vintage shops, coffeehouses like Flightpath and Epoch, and bars like Workhorse. You’ll also find some of the best thrift and vintage stores in the city here, including Blue Velvet and Room Service Vintage. North Lamar and Airport Boulevard are the main thoroughfares in and out, and it’s an easy drive to downtown or over to the Highland and Crestview areas. Kids in North Loop attend Austin ISD, and McCallum High School, an A-rated campus, sits less than a mile from most of the neighborhood.
Housing options in North Loop
Most homes here are midcentury bungalows, cottages, and ranch houses from the 1940s and 50s, some still with original details and others renovated or expanded. What makes North Loop different from a lot of Austin’s other central neighborhoods is the mix: single-family homes sit right next to smaller apartment buildings, condos, and townhouses, which keeps the area more affordable and more diverse than some of its neighbors. If you want a walkable lot with real character instead of a builder-grade new construction, this is worth a serious look.
