East Austin Homes And Condos For Rent

East Austin has changed more than almost any other part of the city over the past decade, and it still has some of the most varied rental stock in Austin — converted bungalows a few blocks from downtown, new-construction condos, and duplexes tucked into older residential streets. If you’re looking to rent here, you’ll find options that don’t really exist anywhere else in the city.

I’m Robbie English, a broker with Uncommon Realty here in Austin.

Why Rent in East Austin

The draw is proximity combined with character. You’re a short drive (or bike ride) from downtown, but the neighborhood itself has its own identity — local coffee shops, taco trailers, art studios, and live music venues that didn’t move in with the newer condo buildings. If you want a look at the local art scene, the Blanton Museum of Art is close by, and Lady Bird Lake gives you trail access if you want to get outside.

“East Austin” isn’t one neighborhood — it covers a lot of ground, and rental listings that get tagged this way span pockets like Chestnut, Holly, and Robertson Hill closer to downtown, and Govalle and Windsor Park farther out toward 183. Holly, wedged between Cesar Chavez and the lake, puts you closest to Lady Bird Lake itself; Govalle trades some walkability for bigger lots and quieter streets.

Rental inventory here runs the gamut: modern condos in walkable pockets, renovated historic homes, and newer townhome-style rentals. Prices and availability shift block by block more than in most Austin neighborhoods, so it helps to work with someone who knows which streets you’re actually comparing.

Thinking About Buying Instead?

If renting is a step toward eventually buying in Austin, I’ve written about what to do first when you want to buy a house and how to know when the timing is right. You can also browse East Austin homes for sale if you want to see what’s on the market to buy.
