How to Choose a Real Estate Agent You Can Actually Trust

July 31, 2026 by Robbie English, REALTOR, Broker, ABR, AHWD, BBA, C2EX, CRB, E-PRO, GRI, MRP, PSA, RENE, RPR, SFR, SRS, TAHS, TBS, TLS

The right agent makes it easier to ask questions, admit uncertainty, and hear honest advice—even when that advice is not what you expected.

Trust Begins With How an Agent Listens

Pay attention to the questions an agent asks before offering solutions. Do they want to understand your timeline, financial comfort, decision-makers, and worries? Or do they rush toward listings and appointments?

An agent cannot guide a person they have not taken the time to understand. A good first conversation should feel useful even before you decide to work together.

How to Choose a Real Estate Agent You Can Trust

Look for Clarity, Not Performance

Confidence matters, but certainty about every unknown should concern you. Trustworthy agents separate fact from opinion, explain what they do not yet know, and describe how they will find an answer.

Use these important questions to ask a real estate agent to learn whether the person can translate complex issues into clear choices.

Ask How They Handle Bad News

Transactions do not always unfold cleanly. Ask how the agent communicates inspection concerns, appraisal problems, missed expectations, or a weak negotiating position. You want someone who will not soften important facts merely to keep the deal moving.

My deeper guide to determining whether an agent is honest and transparent offers additional questions you can use during an interview.

Notice Whether You Still Feel in Control

A capable agent will offer recommendations, but you should never feel punished for slowing down or deciding not to proceed. The process should combine expertise with respect for your authority as the buyer.

A strong client-agent partnership gives you access to experience without requiring you to surrender your voice.

Check the Working Relationship, Not Just the Resume

Experience, education, and local knowledge matter. So do availability, communication habits, and the ability to explain a strategy in language you understand. Ask who will answer your calls, how quickly urgent decisions are handled, and how the team keeps everyone informed.

The right agent is someone you can tell the truth to—and someone you trust to tell the truth back.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many agents should I interview?

Interview enough agents to compare communication, experience, process, and fit. For many buyers, two or three thoughtful conversations provide useful perspective.

What is a red flag when choosing an agent?

Pressure to act before your questions are answered, vague explanations, guaranteed outcomes, and reluctance to discuss compensation or representation are meaningful warning signs.

Should I choose the agent with the most sales?

Sales volume is one data point. It does not automatically reveal who will communicate well, analyze carefully, or give your decision the attention it deserves.

Let’s Build Your Home-Buying Plan

You do not need to arrive with every answer. Bring your questions, honest reactions, priorities, and concerns. I will bring careful analysis, straightforward advice, and a commitment to helping you make a decision you can live with confidently.
