Where are new Austin residents moving from in 2023?

May 4, 2023 by Robbie English, Real Estate Broker Leave a Comment

Austin, Texas, is known for its vibrant music scene, booming tech industry, and bustling food scene. It’s no wonder that it has become a top destination for people from all over the world looking for a new place to call home. In recent years, Austin has experienced significant population growth, with people flocking to the city from all corners of the globe. Let’s take a closer look at where people who move to Austin are moving from, with percentages.  So let’s talk about where are new Austin residents moving from in 2023.  I am Robbie English, Managing Broker and REALTOR at Uncommon Realty and I would love to dive in deeper to this subject with you.

Here are people moving to Texas from?

According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the majority of people who move to Austin are coming from other parts of Texas. In fact, approximately 53% of people who moved to Austin in 2019 were from other parts of the state. This could be attributed to the fact that Austin is the capital of Texas and a major hub for business and innovation, attracting people from all over the Lone Star State.

The second most popular state that people who move to Austin are coming from is California, with about 8% of newcomers coming from the Golden State. This is not surprising, given that California is also a hub for the tech industry and many Californians may be looking for more affordable options when it comes to housing and cost of living.

Other states that send a significant number of people to Austin include Florida, New York, and Illinois. Approximately 4% of newcomers come from Florida, which is known for its beaches, warm weather, and retirement communities. About 3% come from New York, which is a major financial and cultural hub, and about 2% come from Illinois, which is home to Chicago, a major city with a thriving cultural scene.

It’s worth noting that people also move to Austin from other countries. In 2019, approximately 3% of newcomers were from outside the United States. These international migrants come from a variety of countries, including Mexico, India, China, and Canada.

People who move to Austin come from all over the world, but the majority are from other parts of Texas. California, Florida, New York, and Illinois also send a significant number of newcomers to the city. It’s clear that Austin’s reputation as a hub for business, tech, and culture is attracting people from all over, and the city’s population growth shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
