Elgin sits about 20 miles east of Austin in Bastrop County, and it’s one of the faster-growing towns in that stretch of Central Texas without having lost its small-town character — the median household age is still in the mid-30s and most people who buy here plan to stay. Pool homes come up regularly, especially in the newer subdivisions built in the last several years, and given how hot Central Texas summers run, a backyard pool is one of the more requested features I hear from buyers looking in Elgin.

Elgin has long been known as the “Sausage Capital of Texas,” a reputation built by the meat markets and smokehouses downtown that predate most of the newer subdivisions by close to a century. It’s the kind of local identity you don’t get in a lot of newer Austin-area suburbs, and it’s part of why buyers who want small-town character with room to add a pool keep landing here instead of closer-in Central Texas suburbs.
Living in Elgin
Elgin ISD covers seven campuses and around 4,000 students, and it’s rated “Recognized” by the Texas Education Agency. The town’s economy leans on construction, retail, and hospitality right now, which tracks with how much residential and commercial building is happening as Austin’s growth pushes east along US 290. Older, established homes and homes on acreage tend to hold their value here, while newer subdivisions closer to town are where you’ll find most of the pool homes — those newer builds are also where median prices run higher, into the $400,000s in some of the newer sections.
What to expect from a pool home here
Because Elgin’s growth is recent, most of the pool homes on the market are in subdivisions built within the past five to ten years rather than older infill lots downtown, so you’re typically looking at in-ground pools installed by the builder or added shortly after. If you want to compare Elgin against other towns along the eastern side of the metro, I’d also look at the broader Bastrop County listings, since Elgin and Bastrop share a lot of the same growth patterns and price points.
