Clarksville was founded in 1871 by Charles Clark, a freedman, making it the oldest surviving freedmen’s town west of the Mississippi River. The Clarksville Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and that history is still visible in the neighborhood’s small-scale homes and tight-knit street grid. It’s an easy walk to West 6th Street and a short drive to downtown, which is part of why it’s stayed one of the more sought-after pockets of central Austin.
Kids in Clarksville are zoned to Mathews Elementary, O. Henry Middle School, and Austin High School in Austin ISD. Mathews Elementary itself traces back to the neighborhood’s history, since it was the school Clarksville’s Black students were finally integrated into after Brown v. Board of Education.

Housing stock ranges from small original cottages and craftsman-style homes to newer, larger builds on the same narrow lots, so you’ll see real variation in size and style from one house to the next. Because of the historic district designation, exterior renovations and new construction go through additional review, which is worth understanding upfront if you’re planning changes to a property here.
