Jonestown is a small North Shore community on Lake Travis in Travis County, about 25 miles northwest of Austin, and it’s a different market than the city proper. I’m Robbie English, REALTOR and Broker at Uncommon Realty, and I want to walk through what those two words, REALTOR and Broker, actually mean, since a lot of sellers assume they’re interchangeable with “real estate agent.”
TL;DR: Professional Jonestown Home Selling Agent
- REALTOR is a trademarked title that only members of the National Association of REALTORS can use, and it comes with a binding Code of Ethics that a plain real estate license doesn’t require.
- Broker means I’ve met additional state licensing requirements beyond a standard agent license and carry direct responsibility for how a transaction is handled.
- Not every licensed agent is a REALTOR, and it’s worth asking directly before you sign anything.
- You can verify any Texas license, mine included, through the Texas Real Estate Commission.
REALTOR isn’t just a job title
“Real estate agent” describes anyone with an active Texas license. REALTOR is a registered trademark of the National Association of REALTORS, and it only applies to members who’ve agreed to follow the association’s Code of Ethics, a set of standards covering honesty in advertising, disclosure, and how I’m required to treat everyone in a transaction, not just my own client. It’s a meaningful distinction, and it’s one most sellers never ask about.
What Broker means for your transaction
A Broker license requires more experience and additional coursework beyond a standard agent license, and it puts direct legal responsibility on me for how your sale is handled, from pricing through closing. When you work with me, you’re working with the person accountable for the deal, not an agent reporting up to a supervising broker you’ll never meet.
Why this matters more in a market like Jonestown
Jonestown’s buyer pool is narrower and more specific than Austin’s, split further by Lago Vista ISD and Leander ISD zoning depending on the street. A generic approach shows in a market this size. Being accountable as a Broker, and bound to a Code of Ethics as a REALTOR, isn’t a marketing line here. It’s what backs up the pricing and negotiation decisions I make on your behalf.
