Your Guide to Fort Croghan Day

September 10, 2026 by Robbie English, REALTOR, Broker, ABR, AHWD, BBA, C2EX, CRB, E-PRO, GRI, MRP, PSA, RENE, RPR, SFR, SRS, TAHS, TBS, TLS

Most of Burnet’s festivals are about what the town is now — Fort Croghan Day is about what it was before it was a town at all. It’s one of the few events on the Highland Lakes calendar built around real, on-site history rather than a modern tradition, and it’s worth understanding on its own terms.

Your Guide to Fort Croghan Day

TLDR (Too Long; Didn’t Read): Your Guide to Fort Croghan Day

  • Fort Croghan Day is held the second Saturday in October, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Fort Croghan Grounds and Museum in Burnet.
  • Fort Croghan was built in 1849 by the U.S. Army’s 2nd Dragoons, one of four forts established along the Texas frontier to protect settlers, and stayed active until 1852.
  • The grounds include a 1,500-square-foot museum plus eight historical structures: a stage-stop house, blacksmith shop, schoolhouse, powder house, several 19th-century cabins, a lookout house, and a syrup-making shop.
  • On Fort Croghan Day, volunteer reenactors in period costume cook, do laundry, teach school, play music, demonstrate needlework and rope-making, and sometimes stage gunfights.
  • The museum is normally open Thursday through Saturday from the first Saturday in April through the second Saturday in October, and admission is always free.

What Fort Croghan Actually Is

Fort Croghan was built in 1849 by the U.S. Army’s 2nd Dragoons as one of four forts strung along the Texas frontier line, meant to protect settlers moving west into Comanche territory. It stayed an active military post only until 1852, but the site itself kept its role as an anchor for the community that grew up around it, and Burnet’s early history is tied directly to the fort’s presence. What’s on the grounds today isn’t a reconstruction built for tourists — it’s a genuine collection of period structures, including a stage-stop house, a working blacksmith shop, a one-room schoolhouse, a powder house, several 19th-century cabins, a lookout house, and a syrup-making shop, laid out along a paved walking path with a 1,500-square-foot air-conditioned museum at the center.

What Happens on Fort Croghan Day

Once a year, on the second Saturday in October, the grounds come alive with volunteer reenactors dressed in period costume, spending the day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. doing the actual work of 1800s frontier life — cooking over open fire, washing laundry by hand, teaching a one-room schoolhouse lesson, playing period music, demonstrating needlework or rope-making, and occasionally staging a gunfight for the crowd. It’s a hands-on, walk-through kind of event rather than a stage show, and it’s aimed as much at kids as adults.

What It’s Like Living in Burnet Near Fort Croghan

Fort Croghan Day is a smaller, more contained event than Burnet’s festival-sized weekends like the Bluebonnet Festival or Oktoberfest — it draws a steady, engaged crowd rather than a citywide surge, and the grounds themselves are built to handle museum-day visitor traffic year-round. For residents nearby, the bigger value isn’t the one day a year with reenactors; it’s that the museum sits open and free to visit every Thursday through Saturday for more than half the year, which makes it a genuine, ongoing neighborhood amenity rather than a once-a-year attraction.

What to Consider If You’re Buying in Burnet

Fort Croghan isn’t going to be the deciding factor in a home search, but it’s a useful window into what kind of town Burnet actually is:

  • Real history, not manufactured charm. A working 1849 fort with original structures says something honest about Burnet’s roots that a themed shopping district couldn’t.
  • A free, year-round amenity. If you want a place to take out-of-town family or kids on a regular Saturday, a free museum open most of the year is a genuine, low-cost perk of living in Burnet.
  • Proximity to downtown. Fort Croghan sits close enough to the courthouse square that a downtown-adjacent property gets easy walking or short-drive access to it.
  • Community volunteer culture. A museum and living-history day staffed entirely by local volunteers is one more sign of the kind of engaged small-town community Burnet has, alongside its festival calendar.
