What do buyers actually want from a real estate agent? NAR surveyed recent buyers, and the answers are a useful checklist whether you’re hiring an agent or you are one.

50% of recent buyers said finding the right home was their top priority in choosing an agent. Negotiation came up too, 12% cited getting favorable terms and 11% cited skill in price negotiations specifically. Single male buyers weighted negotiation even higher, at 15%.
First-time buyers wanted help understanding what they could actually afford, not just running numbers but understanding what a sustainable monthly payment looks like. Unmarried couples ranked negotiation as their top priority at 15%, a reminder that different buyer groups genuinely want different things from an agent.
Beyond the transaction itself, 61% of buyers valued their agent’s guidance through the buying process overall, and that number jumps to 82% among first-time buyers specifically. 58% valued an agent who could point out issues or hidden features in a property they might have missed themselves, rising to 62% for first-time buyers.
Buyers also cited help finding good service providers (inspectors, contractors, lenders) and general knowledge of the search area as real value an agent brings.
